Maragua Crater Tour Itinerary

Times are approximate and may vary depending on road and weather conditions, the pace of the hike and the time spent at each stop. The tour usually returns to Sucre at around 18:30, although delays are possible.

08:30 – Hotel pickup in Sucre: Pickup from your hotel in central Sucre and departure by private transport.
Morning – Chataquila Pre-Hispanic Trail: Arrive at Chataquila and begin an approximately two-hour hike along the historic mountain trail.
Midday – Maragua Crater: Continue by private vehicle towards Maragua, enjoy the surrounding landscape and stop for the included box lunch.
Afternoon – Niñu Mayu and Garganta del Diablo: Hike to the dinosaur footprints at Niñu Mayu and visit Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat). When available, there may also be an opportunity to see locally made crafts.
Late afternoon – Return to Sucre: Begin the drive back after completing the day’s visits.
Around 18:30 – Hotel arrival: Approximate arrival at your hotel in central Sucre.

Yes, especially if you enjoy hiking, unusual geology and less-visited rural landscapes. Maragua makes a rewarding full-day trip from Sucre, combining the Chataquila Pre-Hispanic Trail, the Maragua Crater and the dinosaur footprints at Niñu Mayu.

How difficult is the hike?

The hike is moderately challenging. It includes approximately two hours on the Chataquila Pre-Hispanic Trail, plus shorter walks at Niñu Mayu and Garganta del Diablo. Expect uneven terrain and elevations of around 3,600 m (11,800 ft). A basic level of fitness is recommended.

Can I visit Maragua in one day from Sucre?

Yes. The tour starts at approximately 08:30 and usually returns to Sucre at around 18:30, allowing you to visit the main sites in one day. Timings may vary depending on road conditions and the pace of the hike.

Is lunch included?

What is the best time to visit Maragua?

The tour operates year-round. From May to October, conditions are generally drier and trails are usually easier to walk. From November to April, the landscape can be greener, but rain, mud and itinerary changes are more likely.

What should I bring?

Bring comfortable hiking shoes with good grip, a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and layered clothing. During the rainy season, pack a waterproof jacket. We also recommend extra water, personal medication and cash in bolivianos for entrance fees or locally made crafts.
